Jen Araby's Siva of Srinagar
CD CC PCC
Siva
Owner: Dr. Winafred and Afton Lucas (Srinagar)
Breeder: Douglas and Catherine Monaghan
List of Accomplishments:
| Foundation stud for Srinagar Kennels. A gift to Afton
Lucas from Wayne and Marlys Jensen, Siva was the sole surviving offspring
from his litter. Siva quickly became Winafred's favorite, reminding her of
the White Collies she raised as a child, starting her Collie Kennel in
Seattle in 1919 when just eight years old. Siva was shown by Frank Sabella and Afton. Afton showed Siva to win his, and Srinagar's, first Group I. Afton says she fell backwards when the judge pointed to her. Winner at 1966 Santa Barbara. Siva was #1 Saluki in 1965 and 1966 (Phillips System) and Dog of the Year in 1967. The Dog of the Year Trophy, originally donated by Srinagar, was first awarded in 1966. Siva's exotic copper shield won as Best of Breed in Mexico hangs prominently in Winafred's home even today. Artist Vernon Taylor did the well-known portrait of Siva against moonlit mountains which is also treasured. While trained for his CDX and very fond of his exercises, Siva never actually gained the title. Siva and Krishna worked daily from 9 to 5 for 2 months under trainer Pat La Coss on the set of the George Stevens film "The Greatest Story Ever Told". The blink of the eye could cause one to miss their actual appearance in this film. On the coursing field, Siva was the first Saluki to receive a Coursing Championship. He won the Breed Challenge Shield 1964-65 and the Coursing Shield 1964-65. He was the first winner of the Pasjaa Cup in 1966 and the first winner of the Knightellington Ishtan Memorial Challenge Cup in 1966. Coursing may have been Siva's greatest joy. Siva was the Top Producer 1966 and won the Stud Dog Challenge Cup 1968 and 1969. Siva sired 18 Champion Get including the all-champion Dhanya litter. He died in July 1968 at 6 1/2 years from pulmonary embolii. As Winafred's heart dog of all-time, he was greatly mourned. |
